‘Fernandes theater goal’ gives United dramatic win after two straight 0–3 defeats
After suffering back-to-back 0–3 defeats in their last two matches, Manchester United turned things around with a dramatic win over Fulham.
The Red Devils defeated Fulham 1–0 in the 11th round of the 2023–24 English Premier League (EPL) at Craven Cottage in London, England, on Thursday (Nov. 4) thanks to a late Bruno Fernandes goal in stoppage time.
The win narrowly avoided back-to-back defeats for United, who suffered back-to-back 0–3 shock losses at Manchester City in the 10th round of the EPL on Sept. 29 and at Newcastle in the League Cup on Sept. 2.
United’s five wins in the league gave them 15 points and moved them up to eighth place in the league standings. Fulham, on the other hand, who are winless in their last three league games (one draw and two losses), remain in 14th place with 12 points from three wins, three draws, and four losses.
United also struggled in the match. Star striker Marcus Rashford was out of the starting lineup due to a pre-match injury. Younger players like Rasmus Hoyluen up front and Anthony and Alejandro Garnacho in the secondary led the attack, but it didn’t have much effect. Instead, it was Fulham who controlled the game. Fulham outshot United 18–12 on the day.
United opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Scott McTominay. However, a VAR review showed that Harry Maguire was in an offside position and the goal was disallowed.
With the game unresolved, United took off Anthony, Christian Eriksen, and Hoilearn and brought on Facundo Pellistri, Mason Mount, and Anthony Martial.
Fulham upped the ante in the second half, bringing on Carlos Vinicius, Sasha Lukic, and Bobby Reid.
